Melissa Frey’s Forecast Discussion:
Brrrrr! We dropped down to 20 degrees in Eugene this morning! You have to go clear back to February to find temperatures colder than that. On Feb. 26, 2011 we dropped to 19 degrees. The only other day colder than that in recent history was back in December 2009 when we dropped to 7 degrees on the 9th.
Freezing fog formed in the southern Willamette Valley and and across the Umpqua Basin making for icy roadways. Frost was also widespread Tuesday morning. Because of the chilly start and the foggy/partly cloudy skies, we’ll likely only see highs in the mid to upper 30s today.
Wednesday will be a transition day with highs in the low to mid 40s and partly sunny skies, but by Wednesday night, the first organized storm of December 2011 will arrive.
It wouldn’t normally be anything to write home about, but since we haven’t seen measurable precipitation this December, it’ll be a nice change. Scattered showers should stick with us on Thursday, but we’ll be back to dry weather by Friday.
The freezing level looks to drop as low as 2,000 feet early Thursday in some areas, so a couple of inches of snow is possible at the passes. It’s not much, but more than we’ve seen in the past 2 weeks!
Have a great Tuesday and stay warm!
